Oregon is entering a period of sustained high temperatures, and the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) is reminding all communities to take steps now to prevent heat-related illness. As preparedness season kicks off across the state, here’s what you need to know to stay safe, get involved, and stay informed.
Extreme Heat: Stay Safe, Stay Prepared

With high temperatures on the way, OEM offers the following guidance to help protect yourself, your family, and your community:
- Monitor National Weather Service heat alerts.
- Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Never leave children or pets in vehicles.
- Check on neighbors who may be vulnerable, including older adults and people without cooling.
- Keep pets safe with shade and water.
- Use caution around rivers and lakes, which may be colder or faster than expected.

Exciting Opportunity: Ready2Respond
Career Connect Oregon’s Ready2Respond program offers a hands-on, immersive experience that prepares students and emerging leaders for real-world disaster response and resilience work.
The Camp Experience
June 22–26, 2026 | Overnight and immersive
Participants will train alongside educators, first responders, and industry mentors while building real emergency-response infrastructure such as shelters and support units. The camp focuses on practical skills, teamwork, and readiness.
Students will earn certifications including: First Aid/CPR, CERT, ORVID, Oregon Employability Skills, Incident Command Management, WiseMind Emotional Resilience, and OSHA-10.
